Video: Booker T. Jones & The Roots - "Everything Is Everything"

A couple of weeks ago Booker T. Jones announced his upcoming album, The Road From Memphis, which will feature hip-hop band The Roots as Jones' backing band. The pairing of two musical giants such as Booker T. and The Roots could only produce magic as evident by the first song they've released from the album; an instrumental cover of Lauryn Hill's "Everything Is Everything". Rolling Stone's got a video of the track, which you can view right here:

The Road From Memphis will be released on May 10, via ANTI- Records, and if you look closely at the end of the video you'll get to see how the album cover is going to look. The Road From Memphis will feature guest appearances from Lou Reed, Jim James of My Morning Jacket and The National vocalist Matt Berninger.

Stream: UNKLE - "Money And Run" (feat. Nick Cave)

I know next to nothing about trip-hop band UNKLE, except that they often collaborate with artists I like, and this time they've got Nick Cave performing lead vocals on "Money And Run". "Money And Run" is the opening track from their upcoming ep Only The Lonely, and judging by this track I really should familiarize myself with UNKLE, even if Nick Cave truly makes the track his own. Check it out below.

Only The Lonely will be released on April 4 via Surrender All.

Watch the official video for Foo Fighters' "Rope"

A few weeks ago I posted a stream for "Rope", the first single from Foo Fighters upcoming album Wasting Light, which will be released on April 12 via RCA. The band have now premiered the video for "Rope" which you can view below (also check out the Lemmy-featuring video for "White Limo", another song from the album here).

Alex Turner releases soundtrack ep for the film Submarine

While Arctic Monkeys are working on their forth album coming out this summer, Alex Turner releases his first solo work in the form of a six-track ep. The ep contains the soundtrack for the British film Submarine, which is out in the cinemas later this spring. The film is based on the debut novel of the same name by Joe Dunthorne, and follows the story of a 15 year-old boy who is struggling to lose his virginity while trying to keep his parents together (if interested watch the tralier for the movie here).

The songs featured on the EP are:
"Stuck On The Puzzle (Intro)"
"Hiding Tonight"
"Glass In The Park"
"It’s Hard To Get Around The Wind"
"Stuck On The Puzzle"
"Piledriver Waltz"

Introducing... The Crookes

I'm so impressed by these Crookes guys based in Sheffield (named after a suburb in the city with the same name). A few years ago I found their Myspace page and liked the music immediately. But I honestly never thought they would become the band they are today. I sadly predicted that they never would play on a bigger stage than on the local pub in Sheffield. Thankfully I was wrong! On the 21st March their second album Chasing After Ghosts is released. Two singles from the album have so far been released; "Bloodshot Days" and "Godless Girl" (watch the videos for the songs below). Their sound is basically simple pop songs inspired by 1950s and 60s pop-music.

On 30th April they are playing live at Debaser Slussen here in Stockholm. No way I'm going to miss that!

Re-discovering The View's charm on new album

I have just re-discovered the Scottish band The View. I listened a lot to their 2007 debut Hats Off To The Buskers but not so much their second release Which Bitch?, which came out 2009.

Next week on the 14th March they are release their third full-length album Bread And Circuses. They have so far released two singles from it; "Sunday" and "Grace". (You can watch the video for "Grace" below).
I've already had a quick listen to the new album and I really like it, in my opinion it's their best record so far. I had forgot all about Kyle Falconer's charming scottish accent and the fast guitars, which are all still there on Bread And Circuses. I can't believe I missed these guys at last years T in the Park. Shame! Now I'm hoping to catch them somewhere in the UK this summer instead!

Arctic Monkeys to release new album Suck It And See on June 6

MP3: The Henry Clay People - "California Wildfire"

A few days ago I wrote a piece on one of my favourite young bands; L.A. rockers The Henry Clay People, as part of our "Introducing..."-series and where I wrote that the "band is currently working on their fourth album, although no title or release date has been set". It looks like I was slightly wrong - they're releasing a new ep instead. The excellent blog Aquarium Drunkard just posted an mp3 of "California Wildfire", a new track that will be on their upcoming ep This Is A Desert, which will be released in May via TBD Records.

"California Wildfire" sees the band expanding their sound, to something slightly bigger and a little slicker but still just as good as their excellent Somewhere On The Golden Coast lp from last year. This Is A Desert just appeared out of nowhere at the top of my wishlist. Download the track below, and if you haven't heard Somewhere On The Golden Coast you can stream it here.

UPDATE: You can now stream the track via Soundcloud thanks to my friends over at One Thirty BPM.

Brother announce gigs with Morrissey in June

Brother announced earlier today that they will be playing with Morrissey on his tour this June. Pretty awesome! Watch their new released video for the new single "Still here" here, published earlier today by sevenleggedoctopus.

Video: Yuck - "Get Away"

When it comes to new British indie rock Yuck are leagues ahead of most current bands and today they released a video for "Get Away", the opening track of their self-titled debut album which was released last month on Fat Possum Records. View the video below, and if you haven't heard it yet I'd suggest you go here and listen to Yuck in its entirety (also check out what I wrote about the album in my Albums of February 2011 piece).

Daniel Blumberg (guitarist/vocalist of Yuck) also has a solo project going under the name Oupa which will release an album this summer called Forget, and you can now stream the title track below or download it here (link courtesy of Yuck). Also check out the album cover below the stream.

Stream: The Strokes - "Machu Picchu" & "Taken For A Fool" (NO LONGER AVAILABLE)

As we're getting closer to the release of Angles, the long-awaited comeback album from The Strokes, on March 22 more tracks are finding their way onto the internet. In addition to the first single "Under Cover Of Darkness", its b-side "You're So Right" and a live version of "Life Is Simple In The Moonlight" we also have the album opener "Machu Picchu" and "Taken For A Fool" thanks to 107.7 The End. The album is called Here We Rest and they've now decided to give away a track from it in exchange for your e-mail address. The track in question is "Codeine" and it is, together with album opener "Alabama Pines", definitely one of the very best tracks to be released this year, by anyone. Download the track and check out the tracklist for Here We Rest below, and view the beautiful album artwork (painted by 400 Unit guitarist Browan Lollar) above.

Tracklist for Here We Rest:

Introducing... Caan

Caan Capan, the former member of Ou Est Le Swimming Pool, is in this second working on his solo debutalbum, simply under the name Caan. Exciting, since I'm a huge Ou Est Le Swimming Pool fan and would like to hear more from them since they're really talented musicians.

Caans music is a kind of slow, but heavy electro-pop with a hinch of hip-hop beats. At least I get a hip-hop feeling when I listen to it. Probably because of the heavy and quite slow baseline. The music he has published so far on his Facebook–site and soundcloud.com, sounds promising. Though I hope for more variation since the songs are quite alike. I'll wait anxiously for more tunes and the debutalbum from Caan.

Listen to Locomotives' debut single "Carnival"

2011 is said to be the return of the British guitar scene. Arctic Monkeys and The View are just a two of the bands who are about to release an album this year, with Beady Eye having already released theirs. Altogether there is not only just well-known guitar bands that are entering the music scene of 2011. Super-hyped British guitar bands like The Vaccines, Mona and Brother are some of the new hopes for the future.

Together with them we have the London-based band Locomotives who are about to release their first single "Carnival" next week, on March 15. Their debut album, which is produced by Adrian Bushby (Muse, Foo Fighters, Band Of Skulls), is supposed to be released by the end of this year. Listen to and download the single "Carnival" here below:

Brother - "Still Here"

New single and video from the guys in Brother. Here is the video for "Still Here":

Watch the official video for The National's "Conversation 16"

The National premiered the video for "Conversation 16" from last year's High Violet on MTV today, which you can watch below. The video features John Slattery from Mad Men and Kristen Schaal from The Daily Show in the roles of a Secret Service agent and the President of the United States, and the band members also appears in the story. Check it out.

Also check out my review and pictures of The National's concert here in Stockholm on March 1 here and the band's performance for MTV Live In NYC here.

Song of the day; Local Natives - "Airplanes"

Song of the day will be Local Natives "Airplanes". I've been skeptical to them before, but started to listen to their album Gorilla Manor yesterday and I think it's really good. This song is very, very beautiful.

Video: Drive-By Truckers perform "Everybody Needs Love" live on Conan 8/3

Drive-By Truckers guested Conan O'Brien last night on his "new" show on TBS, simply titled "Conan", and performed their single "Everybody Needs Love" from their new album Go-Go Boots. "Everybody Needs Love" is a cover of a song by American soul musician Eddie Hinton and the band performed the same song on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon in February (check out that performance here). Enjoy.

Stream Go-Go Boots in its entirety here, and check out my review of it here.

The Felice Brothers to release Celebration, Florida on May 10

I wrote about The Felice Brothers signing to Fat Possum a couple of weeks ago, and that they would be releasing a new record this spring. Well, now more details have been announced, including the album title, tracklist, album art and release date. The album, their fifth according to the "official" count, is called Celebration, Florida and will be released on May 10, and you can view the tracklist below and album cover above (unfortunately I haven't been able to find a bigger version yet).

The album was recorded in the library and theater an old high school in Beacon, New York and according to Far Possum it is "an exhilarating amalgamation of frightening horn sections, unexpected 808s, ambient synth lines, schoolyard taunts, booming, primitive drum beats, heavy bass lines, piano, violin, accordion, ringing guitars, rave beats, and sinister acid jazz that captivates and mystifies". So judging by that hyperbolic sentence this might be something of a departure from their previous sound, but since they've been an amazingly consistent band so far I'm not worried.

Tracklist for Celebration, Florida:
1. Fire At The Pageant
2. Container Ship
3. Honda Civic
4. Oliver Stone
5. Ponzi
6. Back in the Dancehalls
7. Dallas
8. Cus's Catskill Gym
9. Refrain
10. Best I Ever Had
11. River Jordan

MP3: Okkervil River - "Wake And Be Fine"

As we've previously reported Okkervil River's new album I Am Very Far is being release on May 10 via Jagjaguwar, and they've now released the first single from it; "Wake And Be Fine", which you can download below in exchange for your e-mail adress. "Wake And Be Fine" will be released as a 7" vinyl single on March 29 with "Weave Room Blues" as the b-side and the band performed both tracks live on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon in January, check out the performance of "Wake And Be Fine" here and "Weave Room Blues" here.

UPDATE: Will Sheff alerted his fans via the Okkervil River twitter account that he had posted the lyrics to "Wake And Be Fine" on the Okkervil River messageboard, check them out below.

"Wake And Be Fine" lyrics:
Someone said to me, “I’ll come into your dream and speak it to you.” I already knew. I found her in an attic where, dramatically, she leaned in to me, and she whispered these lines: “Wake and be fine. You’ve still got time to wake and be fine.”

Embracers meet with more embracers on the street. They say, “Hold me, dear stranger. Grab on to me. We’re carrying our years around us, or they’re chasing down us. We’re all here at the same time. Can we wake and be fine? Have we still got time to wake and be fine??”

Villians on the creep and killers in the crowd are carving apart our childhood house. Lovers in their sheets, dreaming lovers sweetly turn in their sleep all under sunbeams. Everybody’s crashing, running, calling out the coming of things they kind of can see. Someone said to me, “It’s just a dream. Why don’t you wake up and you’ll see? It’s fine.”

In those miles racing over endless fields of snow (you already heard, you already know), the rescue party finally lost their hearts, and then they shattered their bones, and then they died all alone. The ships all float from beaches by themselves above the hot afternoons. (Goodbye, you balloons!) Adrift above indifferent clouds. Our hearts are crashing loudly on some rock where the gulls whine, “Wake and be fine.”

Full album stream: J Mascis - Several Shades Of Why

Dinosaur Jr. frontman J Mascis got a new solo album coming out next week, on March 15, via Sub Pop. The record is called Several Shades Of Why and features Ben Bridwell of Band Of Horses and Kurt Vile among others, and you can now stream the entire record right here. Several Shades Of Why is Mascis' first studio solo album and, like his previous solo work, is mainly acoustic, in contrast to Dinosaur Jr.'s loud electric guitars. The album is definitely one of the very best released this year and Mascis is one of the few artists who began in the '80s who is still releasing top notch music, both as a solo artist and with Dinosaur Jr.

You can also download two mp3s from the album here.

R.I.P. Ou Est Le Swimming Pool

I just found out that my favourite band in the whole world, Ou Est Le Swimming Pool, are over. They released it on the 27th of February on their Facebook site, but somehow I must have missed it. The frontman and singer Charles Haddon committed suicide last summer on the Pukkelpop Festival in Belgium. So sad. But they decided to release their debut album The Golden Year in the beginning of October anyway, which was a very good decision. It's the best album of all time in my opinion. Excellent; it's everything you can ask from an album.

My co-blogger, Shuffle, some other friends and I was at the tribute show "Chazzstock" at KOKO in London. It was amazing, definitely the best night of my life so far. During the night artist like The Vaccines, Man Like Me, The Kooks, Mr Hudson, were there to perform one song each from The Golden Year and some tunes of their own. It was amazing.

The two (remaining) former members of Ou Est Le Swimming Pool have projects of their own now. Caan Capan is working on a solo album and Joe Hutchinson is the producer of Venus In Furs debut album.

It's really, really sad that they're over, but it was expected. I'm really grateful that they released their debut album, even though it must have been such a hard time for them. I'm also very grateful that I got the opportunity to see them live at Arvikafestivalen 2010. I wish both Joe and Caan the best and good luck in the future. Keep on making your great music!

Best song ever made, and will always be; "Dance The Way I Feel" - first single

"Jacksons Last Stand" - second single

"The Key" - third single, released after Charles Haddons death. Recorded at their gig on the Pukkelpop festival.

Thank you for your amazing music. I will love it forever.

Video: Middle Brother & Mountain Man - "Daydreaming" (live)

Middle Brother with John McCauley of Deer Tick on lead vocals perform the opening track "Daydreaming" from their debut album Middle Brother live with backing vocals from Mountain Man. The video was recorded at The Troubadour in Hollywood, California on December 20 last year at the Invisible Children Holiday Benefit. Check it out below (via Yours Truly).

Middle Brother was released on March 1 via Partisan Records and you can download an mp3 of "Me Me Me" and stream their cover of The Replacements' "Portland" here, and download an mp3 of the title track here.

MP3: Fever Ray - "The Wolf"

Fever Ray, the side-project of Karin Dreijer Andersson of The Knife, released its excellent self-titled debut album in 2009 and in November last year it was announced that Fever Ray would record a song for the upcoming Red Riding Hood film. The film is directed by Catherine Hardwicke who's perhaps most famous for directing the first Twilight film, Thirteen and Lords of Dogtown. Red Riding Hood will be released this Friday in the US, and it's produced by Leonardo DiCaprio.

Listen to the new Fever Ray track "The Wolf" below (via One Thirty BPM), and the soundtrack album will also include the Fever Ray track "Keep The Streets Empty For Me", from the album Fever Ray.

UPDATE: You can now download the track below too (just click the button in the Soundcloud player)

MP3: Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes share three new solo songs

Around three hours ago Fleet Foxes frontman Robin Pecknold shared three new solo tracks via the band's twitter account, although he was quick to point out that "These aren't Fleet Foxes songs, but I didn't know where else to disseminate it. Pretty mellow jams.". The three tracks, "I'm Losing Myself", "Derwentwater Stones" and "Where Is My Wild Rose", were recorded a few weeks ago and "One is a duet with my friend Ed Droste from the amazing band Grizzly Bear, one is just a new solo jam, and one is a cover.", in that order. According to Pitchfork the cover is "Where Is My Wild Rose", which is a song by folk singer Chris Thompson from New Zealand. Highly recommended for fans of Fleet Foxes or just great folk in general.

Download the three tracks here, link courtesy of Robin Pecknold himself.

Robin's link isn't working any more but you can stream and download the tracks right here, thanks to MixtapeMuse.

Fleet Foxes second full-length album Helplessness Blues is out on May 3 via Sub Pop, and if you haven't already heard it you can download the title track here.

The Strokes perform "Under Cover Of Darkness" and "Life Is Simple In The Moonlight" on Saturday Night Live

The Strokes guested Saturday Night Live yesterday to promote their upcoming fourth studio record, Angles, and performed two songs from it live. One was the album's first single "Under Cover Of Darkness" (for which there's also an official music video, which you can view here) and the second one was the atypical, mellow, "Life Is Simple In The Moonlight" a previously unheard track, and the album's closer. You can download a third track from the album, the b-side of "Under Cover Of Darkness", "You're So Right" here. Angles is out on March 22 via RCA Records. Check out the videos below.
